Marangu Route

Known as the “Coca-Cola” route, the Marangu route is a classic trek on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the oldest, most well established route. Many favor the Marangu route because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope. It is also the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations.

The minimum days required for this route is five, although the probability of successfully reaching the top in that time period is quite low. Spending an extra acclimatization day on the mountain is highly recommended when climbing Klimanjaro using the Marangu route.However, despite its immense popularity, we avoid leading climbs on the Marangu route. The route has the least scenic variety of all the routes because the ascent and descent are done on the same path and it is the most crowded route for that reason. Marangu is favored only during the rainy season, where the hut accommodations are preferred over wet ground, or for those who only have five days to climb Kilimanjaro (which we do not recommend anyhow). Otherwise, the Marangu route is a poor choice.

Day 01Drive to Marangu Gate. Walk through the rain forest to Mandara hut (2743m), about 3 hours.
Day 02Leave the forest and cross open moor land to Horombo hut (3760m).
Day 03Today is an acclimatization day with a hike up and down during the day. Tonight we sleep again at Horombo Hut.
Day 04Walk through moorland then alpine desert to “The Saddle” between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. From here you will walk for about an hour to reach Kibo hut (4730m).
Day 05Very early start for the summit on steep scree up to Gillman’s Point (5681m) which is on the crater rim. Continue around the rim (which will take about two hours if you are fit) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) the highest point in Africa. Descend to Kibo Hut for tea and biscuits or soup and then down to the thicker air an relative warmth of Horombo hut.
Day 06Descend to Marangu gate. Drive back to the hotel (B&B).

To increase your likelihood of getting that coveted photo of yourself on top of Uhuru Peak, here are seven tips that can help you reach your goal!

  • Choose a longer route. For the highest chance of success and the lowest risk of altitude sickness, choose a longer journey to the summit rather than a shorter one.
  • Hike ahead of time. Exercises such as running and weightlifting can help, but the bulk of training, if not all of your training, should be hiking. Focus on your cardiovascular fitness, leg strength and spend time improving your balance
  • Hydrate on the mountain. At high levels of altitude, you dehydrate much quicker. Dehydration can increase your chances of headaches, Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), overall fatigue, and even grouchiness, so drink plenty of water.
  • Pole, pole! Pole, pole is a phrase that you will often hear while climbing. In Swahili, it means slowly, gently, softly, quietly, be calm, or take it easy. When taking on a challenge, remember slow, and steady can mean the difference between successfully reaching the summit and turning back early. Take your time and enjoy the scenery.
  • Gear up. While ascending , it is of the utmost importance to make sure you have the right gear.
  • Bring mountain treats. When at altitude, people often lose their appetite. Even with the extreme levels of exertion, getting the calories in to keep you going can be a strangely challenging task. We encourage you to bring some of your favorite, high-calorie snacks to munch on for your climb.
  • Believe! A positive mental attitude can keep you going when fatigue and doubts arise.
